The thing I already miss about NY... putting as much garbage as you want out on the curb on bulk pick up day once a week, and the garbage men taking it all. We now pay for garbage pick up here, and get one can almost identical to the one Daniel had in Australia, to be picked up twice per week. If you have garbage like this, you have to arrange for special pick up and PAY for it! The garbage above was from one of our last clean outs of the old house.

Two words: compost bin
How do you compost no-organic stuff? Like furniture, etc?
You can burn wood stuff and use it in your garden (assuming it wasn't treated with any toxic chemicals). Ash works similar to lime on your soil or compost heap and you don't have to pay for it. I use lump charcoal (not briquettes which have filler) in my grill and the spent bits and ash all wind up in my flower beds and compost bin.
If your town charges by the pound for garbage pickup the way many Jersey towns do, you can save some dough by tossing all of your non-meat food scraps along with garden and lawn clippings into a compost bin and then you wind up with free fertilizer to boot! Which you can then use to grow your own produce which saves more money and takes away any of those nasty salmonella-from-veggies worries. Jersey natives tell me that you are pretty much required to grow at least some tomatoes to be considered a true Garden State resident.
Some stuff like egg shells and coffe grinds can go straight into the garden as is, no composting required.
